I love this series and will always read whatever comes next by this author. This one dives further into changes on the planet and dangers faced, however, at its heart, this is purely and simply a romance novel. In this case, it’s a second chance romance with lots and lots of angst and misery. For me, it was just too much misery. I realized well past the fifty percent mark that I had a constant case of leaking eyeballs that started on page one and hadn’t even started to let up by the fifty percent mark. I did not remove a star for this because I don’t think it is a quality issue with the writing, but rather my own preference.I also really struggle with second chance romance. By the end, the broken hearted party has forgiven the betrayer, but I just never do. In this case ***spoilers ahead*** Kiran never had a good reason for breaking her heart, sleeping with all those other females when he knew in his heart it was cheating (see my highlights) and generally just throwing away the best thing in his life. It literally made zero sense. Then eight years later, he dreams of her and knows he has to come back for her. It takes him a year to get back after the dream, but the good news is, hey, he stops screwing other women for the last year. The author tells us MULTIPLE times that Kiran stopped sleeping with other women for a whole year before trying to get her back. As if this deserves a reward. As if the EIGHT years plus wasn’t important. (I say plus because he was sleeping with other women even before he fully rejects her and he knows it is wrong which is why he hides it from her). He even makes out with HER SISTER. Again, for no reason but “youthful folly”. Throw in the misogynistic claptrap where the male screwed around far and wide for eight years, but the WOMAN could never bring herself to sleep with anyone and remains a virgin. GAG! It made her so pathetic and him such a pig.All of this is why I just didn’t care about their happy ending. I didn’t forgive him. But that’s just me and my cold, unforgiving heart. *Your own preferences and tolerance for cowardly, selfish little man boys who need a prophetic dream to remind them to go back for a woman they hurt may apply.*My criticism that I actually removed stars for was that the ending dragged. I found myself skimming paragraphs looking for something interesting. That may, in part, be due to the fact that I didn’t care about these two MC’s all that much. And my biggest complaint was the sheer amount of times foreign made up words were used. For example, the word “lysi” (yes) is used 176 times. Most of those times are entirely unnecessary to the sentence. For example, they ask a question, then throw lysi on the end of it. SO MANY fake words. It started to feel like a Feehan novel at the height of her Ancient Language hysteria, where you are wading through the nonsense trying to understand what you are reading versus enjoying the story. I found myself very annoyed by it. The previous novels in this series included fake foreign words, but never to the extent that it took over the story and left the reader frustrated.The story is still a good one, if you are someone who likes to feel emotional while reading and are capable of forgiving characters for their hurtful past behaviors. If you are like me, and prefer to avoid these things, I’d just skip this one on the way to the next book. Nothing that important happens in the overall arc. The only thing you need to know is that the red mist is growing, animals are being changed into vicious crazed beasts that are attacking settlements, and they have sent for help from the mysterious priestesses.
