A princess inexplicably betrayed by her fiance, Bel hears in prison that her country has been conquered and loses her last loyal retainer, a knight named Ed. In an outburst of grief and anger, she somehow travels back in time (with a relic of her first life that confirms she didn't imagine everything). Determined not to have the same regrets this time around, Bel sets out to change history, starting with...going to school. She also strives tirelessly to learn magic (something she regrets completely failing at in her first life), goes shopping with friends, learns to ride a horse, and so forth.This is fantasy-time-travel-school-life-adventure story. There's a budding romance, heartwarming family interactions, and thoughtful moments of reflecting past regrets and what's truly important in life. There's also quite a lot of mystery: Bel's new world differs in significant ways from her original one. Bel knows some of those changes are her own handiwork, such as attending the noble academy rather than just having private tutors like she did in her first life. But other differences are rather strange and don't seem she could have caused them, leaving open the question of how exactly Bel's original life and this one are connected. In her narration, Bel at one point suggests she may have been given a divine mission to save her country, but the truth remains unknown.Okey-day, now, the elephant in the room: yes, this story has some major parallels with the Tearmoon Empire light novels published by J-Novel Club. But that's not bad! In the first place, Tearmoon Empire is absolutely awesome, so saying "It resembles Tearmoon Empire," is, in my book, a compliment. Second, this story does differ in meaningful ways from Tearmoon Empire. Reset! has a more serious tone, closer to drama than to comedy. This is aided by Bel's heartfelt first-person narration (a contrast to Tearmoon Empire's over-the-top snarky third-person omniscient narrator). Bel is also more mature and grounded than Tearmoon Empire's Princess Mia, and both less comical and less ingenious than Mia. Another difference is the aforementioned sense of mystery. Tearmoon Empire's Princess Mia has extensive knowledge of why tragedy befell her, but Bel has no clue why her formerly loving fiance turned against her and her country (she even notes that his actions were illogical and that he'd have gained more by marrying her and then murdering her than by just calling off their wedding and imprisoning her).In short, Reset! has many parallels to Tearmoon Empire, but it still stands as its own story, and unless you read Tearmoon Empire and absolutely hated it (you monster!), I happily recommend Reset! The Imprisoned Princess Dreams of Another Chance. It's my new favorite light novel from Cross Infinite World.
